Mosquito Net Guide: Frequently Asked Questions About Selection, Installation, and Use

Which 50°Nord mosquito net is right for my camper? What is the correct mesh size, and how is it installed? Can the net stay fitted when closing the door?

In this guide, we answer the most important questions about our mosquito nets – from vehicle compatibility and mesh sizes to magnetic zippers and mounting, as well as practical use in everyday camper life.

 Vehicle Compatibility and Selection

❯ For which vehicles are 50°Nord mosquito nets available?

50°Nord mosquito nets are available for numerous camper vans, panel vans, and vans.

These include, among others:

• VW California – all models
• VW Caddy
• Mercedes Marco Polo as well as Vito, Viano, and V-Class
• Ford Transit Custom, including Ford Nugget
• Crosscamp, Campster, and Vanster
• Many other vans and campers

The mosquito nets are each tailored to the corresponding vehicle models. You can find out which version is available for your vehicle in our range.

❯ How do I decide which mesh size I need?

With 50°Nord mosquito nets, you can choose between Standard Mesh and Fine Mesh. The most important factor is where you are traveling with your camper and which insects you want to protect yourself from.

Standard Mesh – ideal for most destinations

Our Standard Mesh is the first choice for most trips in Central and Southern Europe.
It reliably protects against mosquitoes, flies, and other annoying insects. At the same time, the comparatively large mesh size ensures particularly good airflow and excellent visibility outside. The mesh size is 1.29 × 1.13 mm, with an open area of approximately 65%. Especially on warm days, the good air circulation is an important advantage.

Fine Mesh – for Scandinavia and particularly small insects

Anyone who regularly travels to Scandinavia or other northern regions may know the tiny biting midges, no-see-ums, and sandflies. These particularly small insects can sometimes pass through the mesh of conventional mosquito nets. That is why we offer our Fine Mesh with a significantly finer mesh structure of 0.94 × 0.94 mm. The open area is approximately 55%. This means that the airflow is slightly lower compared to the Standard Mesh, but the fabric offers better protection against particularly small insects.

The two mesh sizes at a glance:

• Standard Mesh: 1.29 × 1.13 mm mesh size, approx. 65% open area. Particularly good airflow and reliable protection against mosquitoes and flies.

• Fine Mesh: 0.94 × 0.94 mm mesh size, approx. 55% open area. Fine-mesh protection also against very small insects such as biting midges and no-see-ums.

Our recommendation: For most trips in Central and Southern Europe, the Standard Mesh is the best choice. For Scandinavia and regions with particularly small insects, we recommend the Fine Mesh.

Features and Handling

❯ What material are 50°Nord mosquito nets made from?

50°Nord mosquito nets are made from plastic-coated fibreglass mesh.
This material offers significant advantages over conventional polyester or nylon mesh.

The main advantage is the mesh's excellent dimensional stability and durability.

• Shape-retaining: The mesh does not stretch out of shape and retains its original form over time.
• Resilient: Even if you accidentally bump into the mesh or press against it lightly, it does not develop permanent bulges.
• Clean-cut edges: Fibreglass mesh does not fray at the cut edges.

These properties make plastic-coated fibreglass mesh particularly suitable for everyday use in a campervan, where mosquito nets are frequently touched and subjected to mechanical stress.

❯ What is special about the magnetic zipper?

The sliding door is one of the most frequently used entrances and exits of a camper. That is why all 50°Nord mosquito nets for sliding doors are equipped with a patented, self-closing magnetic zipper.
This special 2-in-1 system combines classic zipper teeth with an integrated magnetic strip. When you walk through, the entrance opens. The magnets then automatically bring the two sides back together and close the passage. So you don't have to turn around every time and close the mosquito net behind you. This is particularly convenient when you are carrying dishes, camping equipment, or your morning cup of coffee.

For the night, the entrance can also be completely closed from the inside with the classic zipper.

Another advantage of the magnetic zipper: It also adheres to the bodywork. If you want to leave the passage permanently open during the day, you can simply fold the entrance to the side and fix it in the open position using the magnetic trim on the bodywork and door.

❯ Do all 50°Nord mosquito nets have a magnetic zipper?

All 50°Nord mosquito nets for sliding doors are equipped with our patented, self-closing magnetic zipper.

Mosquito nets for the tailgate, on the other hand, deliberately do not have a magnetic zipper, as the rear opening is used significantly less frequently as a passageway in everyday camping.

❯ Can I leave the mosquito net installed when I close the door?

Yes, in principle, the 50°Nord mosquito net can remain installed when you close the sliding door.

There is one possible limitation with electrically operated sliding doors. These have safety sensors that detect obstacles and are intended to prevent injuries. In some vehicles, the sensors are so sensitive that they detect the installed mosquito net as an obstacle. In this case, the electric sliding door may not close completely, but instead open automatically again.

Whether this behavior occurs depends on the respective vehicle and its sensors.
In general, we recommend paying attention when choosing a vehicle to ensure that the vehicle has NO electric sliding doors. Because these offer further disadvantages when camping.

Installation and Mounting

❯ How are the mosquito nets installed?

The installation of the 50°Nord mosquito nets is fast, tool-free, and without drilling or gluing.
An elastic trim band and sewn-in magnets hold the mosquito net directly to the vehicle frame. The magnets are covered with textile material to protect the vehicle paintwork. The net is simply inserted along the door frame and securely held in position by the magnetic mounting.
It can also be removed in just a few seconds when needed.

❯ Does anything need to be screwed or glued inside the vehicle to install the mosquito net?

No. No drilling, screwing, or gluing is required on the vehicle to install the 50°Nord mosquito nets. The mounting is carried out exclusively using the elastic trim band and the integrated, textile-covered magnets directly on the vehicle or door frame.

The mosquito net can therefore be removed at any time without requiring any permanent changes to the vehicle.
