Dustbox Guide: Frequently Asked Questions About Installation, Materials, and Care

Which 50°Nord dust box is right for your camper? What are the sliding rails for, and how are the dust boxes installed?

The 50°Nord dust boxes create additional storage space in your camper. In this guide, we answer the most important questions about vehicle compatibility, installation, materials, and care.

Vehicle Compatibility and Custom-Made Solutions

❯ For which vehicles are the 50°Nord dust boxes available?

The 50°Nord dust boxes are available for the following vehicle models:

• VW California T5, T6 and T6.1
• VW California T7
• Mercedes Marco Polo

Additional variants are planned for 2027:

• Ford Nugget
• Crosscamp and Campster

❯ Can I also use the dust boxes in other vehicles?

The 50°Nord dust boxes are specially designed for the cabinet compartments and shelves of the respective vehicle models. Their dimensions are precisely tailored to the available storage spaces, so that they fit perfectly into the compartments for which they are intended.
Due to this vehicle-specific design, the dust boxes are only suitable for the respective vehicle model.

❯ Are custom-made solutions or individual modifications possible?

For vehicle manufacturers, professional vehicle converters and outfitters, we also develop custom dust boxes and special solutions on request and manufacture them from a quantity of 80 to 100 sets, depending on the design and construction.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer individual custom-made solutions for private customers due to our current production capacity.

❯ Can I order individual boxes or only complete sets?

The 50°Nord dust boxes are available not only as complete sets, but also individually as spare parts.
If a box is damaged or you only need part of a set, you can order the corresponding dust boxes individually from our spare parts store.

Also sliding rails are available individually as spare parts.

Sliding Rails and Installation

❯ What are the sliding rails used for?

The sliding rails ensure precise guidance of the dust boxes and allow them to be easily pushed in and out – even when fully loaded. They are usually made of coated aluminium or plastic and are designed to be self-adhesive or self-bonding.

The rails bridge vehicle-specific obstacles such as screws, rivets, protruding cabinet doors or edges. This prevents the dust boxes from getting stuck, jamming or binding when being pushed in and out.

❯ Do the sliding rails need to be screwed in?

No, the sliding rails are glued in. Drilling or screwing is not required.
The rails are equipped with a highly adhesive foam adhesive layer on the back from the factory. This compensates for uneven cabinet surfaces and ensures a clean, secure fit of the sliding rails. This makes it easy and reliable to attach the rails in the intended cabinet compartments.

❯ How are the dust boxes assembled?

Assembling the 50°Nord dust boxes is incredibly simple. Each box consists of only two components:

• A base plate with precisely fitting connection tabs
• A one-piece, wraparound side panel with corresponding cutouts

The side panel is placed around the base plate. The connection tabs of the base plate fit into the cutouts of the side panel. Finally, the side panel is closed by a dovetail joint. This creates a stable unit.

The marking system makes assembly easier: Each base plate and side panel is marked with a matching dot-dash code. This indicates both which components belong together and where the assembly begins. The two markings are then aligned with each other. From this point, the base plate is gradually inserted into the side panel and the box is then closed.

❯ Can the box be disassembled again later?

In principle, yes. However, we recommend not disassembling the dust box again after assembly if possible.

The collapsible design is primarily intended for space-saving shipping as well as storage at our factory and with our dealers.
In the assembled state, the tabs of the dovetail joints are protected.
When disassembling, however, there is a risk that the connection tabs may be damaged.

If disassembly is absolutely necessary, please follow the following instructions:

• Carefully release the dovetail joints.

• Do not pull on the tabs or pull them apart by force.

• When transporting or storing in the disassembled state, be sure to protect the tabs from damage.

• Do not twist the connection tabs by more than 10° under any circumstances.

Our recommendation: Keep the dust box permanently assembled if possible. This keeps the more sensitive connection tabs protected and allows the box to be used without problems in everyday life.

Material and Care

❯ What material are the 50°Nord dust boxes made of?

The 50°Nord dust boxes are made of specially processed high-tech felt. Unlike conventional, soft felt, the material is compressed and stabilized using a thermal process under high pressure.
This creates a 10 mm thick, firm and dimensionally stable material, which in its strength resembles wood or plastic, while retaining the lightness and sound-insulating properties of felt. The compressed felt is cut and shaped on specially modified machines with artisanal precision. The result is our lightweight, robust and permanently dimensionally stable dust boxes.

❯ Are the dust boxes water-resistant or waterproof?

As is typical for felt, the specially compressed high-tech felt can also absorb liquids. Smaller amounts of liquid are absorbed by the material, while larger amounts can pass through the material. However, thanks to its special processing, its strength, dimensional stability and shape retention remain fully intact. Even when completely soaked, the dust box retains its original shape and stability without swelling or deforming.

Tip: Anyone who wants to safely contain liquids can line the dust box with waterproof foil or an inner bag. This is particularly recommended when storing liquid containers or food that could leak.

The water resistance of the material is also advantageous when cleaning, as we explain in the next question.

❯ How do I clean and care for my dust box?

The 50°Nord dust boxes are easy to care for and can also be thoroughly cleaned with water if necessary.

• Light soiling: Simply wipe off dry dirt or remove it with a brush.

• Heavier soiling: Clean with warm water and a little mild soap or dishwashing liquid.

• Stubborn soiling: The dust box can be completely soaked in water to loosen deeply embedded dirt or liquid residues. A light solution of water and neutral soap or dishwashing liquid is ideal for this. Then rinse thoroughly with plenty of warm, clean, running water.

• Intensive cleaning: For particularly stubborn soiling, a pressure washer can also be used. After wet cleaning, allow the dust box to dry completely in the open air. Thanks to the specially compressed high-tech felt, it remains dimensionally stable even when completely soaked.

Important hygiene note
Avoid letting perishable liquids such as fruit and vegetable juices, milk, sauces or dips get into the material. Such liquids can penetrate deep into the felt and leave residues that can promote the growth of microorganisms and pose a health risk.

Our recommendation: Always store perishable food and liquids in suitable, leak-proof containers such as cans, bottles or tightly sealed bags. If such liquids do leak, the dust box must be immediately washed out thoroughly with warm water and a mild cleaning agent and then dried completely.

❯ Can the box be repaired if damaged?

Damage to the 50°Nord dust boxes is rare. In the assembled state, the base plate and side panel form a very stable unit and the joint is protected.

The dovetail joints are slightly more sensitive before the box is assembled. Damage can occur, for example, during package transport or when disassembling the box for cleaning purposes. If disassembly is required, the joints should therefore be released particularly carefully.

If a connection tab does not tear or break despite this, it can be repaired with a hot glue gun. A tab repaired in this way restores the stable connection, so that the dust box can subsequently be used without restrictions.

How is the damaged area repaired?

• Prepare the hot glue gun: Use a commercially available hot glue gun and allow it to heat up completely so that the glue is as liquid as possible.

• Apply the glue: Put a sufficient, but not excessive, amount of hot glue into the groove of the damaged (torn) tab. If the tab is completely torn off, drip a little hot glue onto both angled surfaces.

• Join the parts: IMMEDIATELY press the tab into the intended position and fix the corner until the glue has cooled and hardened.

The hot glue bonds with the fibers of the material, thus ensuring a permanent connection.

Important: Only hot glue is suitable for the special high-tech felt. Other adhesives do not achieve sufficient adhesion on the material.
